Rijksakademie Artist Residency in Netherlands

An annual grant of €19,800, along with a private studio and production budget, is offered through the Rijksakademie residency program for artists working in the visual and fine arts in the Netherlands.

The aim of this residency is to create a space for experimentation, research, and critical reflection on artistic practice. Unlike academic institutions, Rijksakademie focuses on practice-based work and intellectual exchange. Artists become part of an international and critical community, where they are encouraged to push the boundaries of their creativity. Rijksakademie is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious artist residency programs in the world.

Participation in this residency is open to artists from all over the world.

Important note for Iranian artists residing in Iran:
Due to Iran being listed on the DAC (Developing Assistance Committee) list, these applicants are exempt from paying the application fee.

Eligible Disciplines:

All fields of visual and fine arts are accepted, including (but not limited to):
painting, sculpture, installation, video art, photography, digital arts, and related practices.

Start Date:

January 2027 (one- or two-year program)

Support Provided:

  • Living grant of €19,800 per year (based on 2026 figures)
  • Artwork production budget of approximately €2,500 per year
  • Free private studio, including electricity, heating, and internet
  • Access to specialized technical workshops (metal, wood, ceramics, graphic, digital, etc.)
  • Mentorship and consultations with international artists and theorists
  • Assistance with the visa process and access to affordable housing in Amsterdam

Fees:

  • Application fee: €60 (free for Iranian residents in Iran)
  • Participation fee: Accepted artists must pay €1,875 per year to the academy (usually covered through the provided grants)

  • Professional CV
  • Artist statement
  • Answers to the online application questions (regarding artistic motivation and goals)
  • Letter of recommendation (may be requested in later stages)

An academic degree is not required to apply. The selection committee places primary emphasis on the quality of the portfolio and the artistic potential of applicants. However, artists are expected to demonstrate at least 2–3 years of independent professional practice in the visual arts.
