Call for Applications: NOMIS Fellowship – University of Basel, Switzerland

A fully funded one-year fellowship, including salary, travel support, and conference funding, is being offered by the eikones Center for the Theory and History of the Image at the University of Basel. The fellowship supports innovative research projects that explore the role of images as models or paradigms in scientific and aesthetic contexts.

Eikones has been active since 2005 as a hub for graduate and postdoctoral research on images. The center’s main focus is the interdisciplinary study of images as instruments of knowledge and cultural practice.

This fellowship program prioritizes projects that examine how images serve as tools for education, documentation, and knowledge production, including:

    •    The history and theory of imaging techniques in the natural sciences

    •    Cultural and political patterns and stereotypes

    •    The formation of styles, artistic canons, and iconographies

Eligibility Criteria

– Doctoral degree required

– At least one published book (e.g., doctoral dissertation) or three journal or edited volume articles

– Proficiency in English or German

– Applicants from all disciplines whose research relates to images as models are welcome

– Fellows are required to reside in Basel for the duration of the program
