International KOGEI Award in Toyama
With the objectives to grasp the global trend of KOGEI (artisan crafts) world and offer a future vision of KOGEI, the International KOGEI Award in Toyama is for young draft artists, artisans, designers and craftspeople who are 50 years of age or younger and engaged in craft making.
This award is aimed to honor young craftspeople who reflect new global trends on their works and full of potentials through comprehensive evaluation of their works, expressions and techniques.
The eligible techniques and materials include lacquerware, metalwork, casting, wood carving, hand-made paper, silk textiles, lacquer work, ceramics, as well as glass, leather, dying-and-weaving, and many other crafts historically practiced around the world.
We are looking forward to many entries from craftspeople who are practicing novel KOGEI (artisan crafts), showcasing art created only by KOGEI which consists of inextricably connected two elements, tradition and innovation.
Eligibility
Must be 50 years of age or younger (as of January 10, 2020).
No restrictions on nationality
An individual or group engaged in craft-making (e.g. artist, artisan, designer)
No restrictions on affiliation
*Can be a member of an organization or company. In that case, please obtain approval for application from the entity before applying.
Awards / Privilege
Prize: Grand Prize (1 individual/group) 2,000,000 JPY
Excellence Award (1 individual/group) 500,000 JPY
Honorable Mention Award (4 individuals/groups) 300,000 JPY
Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Special Prize (1 individual/group) 300,000 JPY
Privilege: The Grand Prize-winning work will be added to the collection of the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design.
Registration / Jurying Timeline
- Registration: October 1, 2019 - January 27, 2020 (Closed: 11:59pm *Japan Time)
- First-round of jurying: mid-February 2020
- Based on the submitted materials, such as photos of the works and artist statement (intention for creating the work), the first-round of jurying is performed to select award-winning works.
- Second-round of jurying: late-May 2020
- Exhibition: late-May – early July 2020 (Exhibition period: about two months)
- Venue: Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design
- Award Ceremony: late June 2020
